The Hack

EditorialJoeI’m a writer, editor, photographer, graphic designer, publisher, coffee connoisseur and media hound (see my professional portfolio here) who made the leap from blue to white collar nearly five years ago after running bottling plant lines at a factory winery in Upstate New York.

I took on my psuedo-epithet in 2005, the year I finished the draft of my first screenplay and was hired onto my first paid job in media. Why a “hack,” that most odious of insults directed particularly toward scribes? The hack that’s conscious of being a hack can attempt to avoid the pitfalls in his awful prose (e.g. the florid stiltiness* I’m exhibiting right now).

I started this blog about two months after I moved to Milford, Pennsylvania. These were the halcyon days, when the real estate bubble had yet to burst and ours was a 60-page full-color glossy that began to publish 10 times a year instead of 6.

Since then, its seen my media-hiatus (not really) during my travels to Myrtle Beach as well as my return to the tri-state region to become art director of a trade magazine. This blog represents the birth, death, and rebirth of the hack.

*No, stiltiness isn’t in my dictionary either. But then, we make words because we need them.
